s&box is still evolving, and discovery can feel uneven—especially for smaller servers. The goal of this guide is simple: make it easy for the right players to find your server, understand what it is, and join without friction.
When the in-game browser is enough
If your server is a straightforward mode with a clear name and you already have steady traffic, the in-game browser may be all you need.
Use it as your baseline. Everything else should add clarity, not replace the default flow.
Why directories exist (and the tradeoffs)
Community directories tend to appear when the in-game browser is missing one of these:
- Deeper filtering beyond a broad gamemode label
- A place to showcase “what makes this server different”
- Links to Discord, a trailer, docs, or a website
Tradeoffs to keep in mind:
- A directory is a service you depend on. If it goes down, your listing disappears.
- If it is closed-source, you cannot self-host or contribute fixes.
- You may still need to maintain the in-game presence and your own landing page.
What to include in any server listing
Treat the listing like a one-screen pitch:
- One sentence: “What is this?”
- One sentence: “Who is it for?”
- A stable join path (and a backup link)
- Discord link (and a rules summary)
- A short “what to do first” for new players
If you have a trailer, keep it short. A 15–30 second clip that shows the core loop is better than a 3-minute montage.
A minimal “server info” checklist (copy/paste)
Use this as a template for your Discord, website, or directory entry:
- Name:
- Mode:
- Region(s):
- Session length (short/long):
- Controls / keybind highlights:
- Rules (3 bullets):
- New player steps (3 bullets):
- Discord:
- Known issues / FAQ:
Keep your discovery ethics clean
Avoid advice that boils down to “game the list”. It might work short-term, but it is brittle and it won’t build lasting players. Prefer repeatable signals: a clear pitch, a clean first-time experience, and stable links.
